Synergy or How I Used a New Technology This Week

So I started this blog as part of a learning experience at Glendale Community College, something called 23 Things, an introduction to Web 2.0. This week, for thing #5, I created a Flickr account and linked it to my new blog. Flicker lets me store my pictures on the web for the entire world (the wired world, anyway) too see! It has a map feature that allows you to link your photo to the spot on the globe where it was taken. You can search this feature, too, and look at photos from around the world.

So, voila, now I (and you, and a thousand thousand others) have a "presence" on the web. Just think of the possibilties, the instant transmission of all the world's combined wisdom in words and pictures, to everyone, everywhere, all the time. Staggering.

It seemed like every time I opened my web browser for the health news last year I read another article about dangers in the food supply or at the pharmacy. I didn't have to open my browser to notice the rising costs. Long story short, I started a kitchen garden this year. Call it my personal health initiative (PHI) for '07. Or, rather, my first PHI of '07, because since then I've begun biking to work. And a yoga course. And an "Overview of Herbal Remedies," WED 172, (online at http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/fw/wellness/wellness.htm.)

I got my subject assignment yesterday for my research project for WED 172. My research subject is a plant commonly known by the deliriously happy name of "sundew." Unfortunately, until yesterday I had never heard of it, nor ever seen it. So, after I posted my weekly assignment (naming actions of herbs) to our Blackboard discussion group, I decided to do something different for a while. I would postpone learning about sundew and instead learn more about blogging.

I found the link to 23 Things in an old e-mail and followed the instructions for the next exercise. After creating my Flickr account and uploading pictures and linking them to my blog, I went back to the 23 Things assignment instructions and saw that I needed to do a photo search in Flickr, on any subject I chose. What to choose, what to choose?

I did not make the photograph of sundew, I found it on Flickr and linked it to my blog. I did make the picture of Braces and Brando. You can see more photography by clicking on the Flickr link in my previous post.

Learning and teaching are, for me, among life's most satisfying endeavors. My life has provided me with plenty of opportunities to do both. I will elaborate in future postings. For now, thank you Christine and Karen for making this opportunity possible.

As for the seven and a half habits of life-long learners, the hardest for me will be number one: Begin with the end in mind. I don't always know where I'm going to end up when learning starts to happen-sometimes, like life, learning happens when we're making other plans. Habits two through are seven and a half are easy-those come naturally to me.
